A BIT OF JARGON Empty
PostSubject: A BIT OF JARGON   A BIT OF JARGON EmptyMon 6 Mar - 5:52

Four common words: "Happy Birthday to You"
Still much is hidden with that inscription
When you consider it from the linguistic point of view...

Diachronic linguists might try to find an explanation
To account for the change "you" has passed through
Can't we come up with "thou" in the underlying representation?

Those dealing with syntax will have a hard time too
If they wish to make a rather unnecessary contribution
And supply our phrase with a V.P. or Aux. to make it "true".

It might be very interesting for a phonetician
To spot that the rounding feature of [u]
Has resulted in having a [w] in "to's" pronunciation

Semanticists will be the luckiest among the linguists' crew
Since the meaning is clear; it's a most common expression
Stating our love and best wishes to "you know who"...

lol! (from a cracked pseudo-linguist)
